  Headlong Hall was performed as a dramatic reading by Librivox, and I narrated. Like many people who listen to their own recordings, I think my bits the worst of the lot. It sounded fine on my own equipment, but through the $5 bud headphones I’m using on my phone (since the ridiculously expensive ones that came with it gave up the ghost) my /5(25). In a series of novels written over a long creative life (he died at age 81), with titles caricaturing the fashion for castles and abbeysHeadlong Hall (), Melincourt (), Nightmare Abbey (), Crotchet Castle (), and Gryll Grange (), Peacock tried to show that the proper function of literature, as he said in Nightmare Abbey 3/5(1).

  His fiction – Nightmare Abbey is the best of four country-house satires, including Headlong Hall and Crotchet Castle – occupies a special place in this list and deserves to be remembered as. Peacock wrote Nightmare Abbey as a satire, and he has folded in allusions to or quotations from literally dozens of other works. He makes use of many long, impressive-sounding words (some of which he very possibly made up!). Ignore these and his occasional Latin phrase, treat the rest as a farce, and you’re on track for a fun listen! First Page:2/5(1).
